About Me
Three passions rule my life: horses, hills and humanity's status vis-a-vis the planet. Three further passions enable me to explore life's growing edge. Creativity, particularly in writing; creatures, particularly wild ones, and kids.
Conventionally, an eclectic basis produces a polymath. I prefer the surveyor's take of triangulation. Triangulation is especially useful here. In terms of credibility, and certification, I have an Economics degree and three different teaching qualifications: in primary, horse-riding and mountaineering. My career moves reflect this. I've worked as a headteacher of an Orkney island school, as a riding teacher and in Outward Bound and Outdoor Pursuits centres. My twenties I spent roaming and worked in Donegal in Ireland, Switzerland, Scotland, Wales and the Lake District with horses. In turning to equestrian journalism I became published internationally.
The big shake-out, in my thirties, resulted in specialising in my two favourite R's, (ahhh's..): teaching both Creative writing and horse-riding to all ages. High points were a commission to write a series of children's short stories for Gerald Durrell's Jersey Wildlife Preservation Trust and obtaining a grant to bring young writers to Swanwick Writers Summer School to help continue its tradition as the longest running writers conference in the U.K. Winning the Earth Vision Nature Writing Contest in 2009 and being appointed the competition's judge in 2010-11 were special for me.
I now live in the Western Isles of Scotland with my husband, swim with seals, walk the hills, garden for wildlife and promote and write about eco-awareness. As Ecologisers In entertainment-education we're into pro-active problem solving, especially in the context of the environment and our shared planet.
